Kia Shrinks the Sorento Plug-In Hybrid to One $53,890 Trim
The 2027 Kia Sorento Plug-In Hybrid comes only as a fully loaded X-Line SX-Prestige at $53,890, after Kia dropped the EX trim that started the 2026 lineup at $48,290.
The 2027 Kia Sorento Plug-In Hybrid comes only as a fully loaded X-Line SX-Prestige at $53,890, after Kia dropped the EX trim that started the 2026 lineup at $48,290.
The Sorento Hybrid moves the other way, adding a new X-Line EX trim at $43,090 to a lineup that now spans four models from $39,090 to $47,590. Both electrified Sorentos gain a standard head-up display on SX-Prestige trims, swap Steel Gray paint for Pale Gray, and keep the $1,495 destination charge.
Kia priced the Hybrid on October 15 and the Plug-In Hybrid on October 19, a couple of weeks after the gas Sorento rose $200 across the board. Against the 2026 Hybrid and 2026 Plug-In Hybrid releases, the Hybrid EX trims are up $200 and both X-Line SX-Prestige models are up $400:
| Trim | 2027 MSRP | 2026 MSRP |
|---|---|---|
| Sorento Hybrid EX FWD | $39,090 | $38,890 |
| Sorento Hybrid EX AWD | $40,890 | $40,690 |
| Sorento Hybrid X-Line EX AWD | $43,090 | new |
| Sorento Hybrid X-Line SX-Prestige AWD | $47,590 | $47,190 |
| Sorento Plug-In Hybrid EX | dropped | $48,290 |
| Sorento Plug-In Hybrid X-Line SX-Prestige AWD | $53,890 | $53,490 |
Prices exclude the $1,495 destination charge.

The new Hybrid X-Line EX takes the EX’s equipment and adds gloss black wheels and gloss black exterior accents, and every X-Line trim now gets machined wood inlays on the instrument panel and doors. Stepping up to the X-Line SX-Prestige brings a panoramic sunroof, Bose audio and second-row captain’s chairs, plus the head-up display that is newly standard. Kia is also adding HEV emblems to the tailgate so the hybrid is no longer badged like the gas car.
The plug-in’s single trim gets the same wood inlays along with X-Line embossed front seat backs, on top of the blackout treatment it already had: dark Gun Metal lower bumper trim, grille surround and lower door garnish, gloss black window surround, roof rails and mirror caps, and black 19-inch wheels. A combined Level 1 and Level 2 charging cable is standard. Kia’s release describes the consolidation as a simplified lineup, and with the EX gone, the cheapest plug-in Sorento now costs $5,600 more than it did a year ago.
The hybrid is where the demand is. Kia’s September sales report says Sorento Hybrid sales rose 112 percent in the month and the brand’s hybrid sales as a whole climbed 152 percent, which helped push Kia to its best September ever. Unlike the gas Sorento, the Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid are not among the models Kia builds in West Point, Georgia.

The HyundaiHQ Take
Cutting the plug-in to one trim at nearly $54,000 before destination says plainly how few people were buying the $48,290 EX, and it turns the Sorento PHEV from a value play into a niche product for buyers who want everything and can charge at home. That is a shame, because a plug-in three-row under $50,000 was a real differentiator against the Toyota Grand Highlander, which has no plug at all. The regular Hybrid is the smart money now, and the new X-Line EX at $43,090 is the one to buy: it brings the look of the loaded car with the equipment most families actually use, in a lineup that is growing 112 percent for good reason.
